    Description

Vintage 800 Dutch Silver Repousse Sugar Spoon topped with Woman Carrying Buckets; Pierced Handle, and Men Picking Apples on the Bowl
This ornate Dutch/Holland/Netherlands souvenir sugar scoop spoon is probably an antique, but since the hallmark is unreadable, it’s not possible to be specific about its age, though the designation of 800 silver is old. Sterling silver is 925 part silver out of a thousand. This silver, once common in the Netherlands, Germany and Italy, had a lower silver content of 800 out of a thousand.
The spoon has a large bowl or scoop for the relatively short handle. The bowl is 1 3/4 in. long and 1 1/2 in wide. The entire length of the spoon is 4 11/16. It weighs .8 oz = 22 grams.
At the top of the handle is a woman carrying two buckets with the traditional yoke over her shoulders. They could be water or milk buckets. The stem of the handle is pierced with holes and markings to make it look as though is is an open chain.
The repousse picture on the bowl features three men that appear to be harvesting apples from a tree, with a building in the distance. Repousse requires the metalworker to pound or hammer through from the back to make areas stand out in low relief. This results in “holes” on the reverse and stand-out relief on the front.
The back of the handle does have markings which are probably hallmarks, but they are unreadable, at least to me. I attempted to make them easier to see by enlarging the area greatly and taking out the color and increasing the contrast. You can see their general shapes. The number “800,” however, is very clearly stamped into the silver. There is also a long number, maybe a pattern number (?) written or scratched into the metal above these marks. You can clearly see it in the contrast photo. It appears to be 1161192. European number ones (1) have an angled downstroke like a deformed US 7. But the number following 6 doesn’t have one and I’n not sure whether it’s intended to be a letter instead.
The spoon is in very good condition, no nicks, warping or bent areas, just normal wear. The back of the handle with the hallmark is not perfectly molded and polished. What looks like a deep scratch in the photo seems to be either a defect or another stamp of some kind that I can’t read. You can see it well in two of the photos.
    Please examine the photos carefully.
I photographed the spoon without a flash, but my reflection, my red camera and the room reflected in some areas. There are no colors on the spoon. :)
