    Description

    A fantastic French import Scandinavian silver hovedvandsaeg/vinaigrette/spice box. Simple classic heart shape with crowned top, hinged lid, and gold washed interior. Hovedvandsaeg were given as tokens of affection from men to their chosen lady, and often contained smelling salts or aromatic vinegar intended to revive the senses. This piece measures approx. 2.5"l x 1.75"w 1"d, and weighs approx. 32g/1.1oz. It's in fair condition, displaying general wear consistent with age/use, including light tarnish and surface scratches, some small dings throughout, a bit of splitting along its side seems, and a shallow dent to the box's front - see pictures. The lid's hinge is also slightly loose. These boxes typically date to the eighteenth or nineteenth century. Ours has no identifying date marks, but is stamped along its opening rim "R," "OR," and twice with what we believe are French import swan marks. Its exact origin and age are unknown. A fabulous historic piece for the collector!
