The balangandans were traditionally made of silver and were attached to a heavy chain belt worn around the waist which symbolically suggests fertility.
The "pencas" were used mainly in the eighteenth and nineteenth century, and continued to be used late into the nineteenth century after slavery was abolished. The large and heavy bunches of talismans were worn by Creole black and mixed race women, first as conspicuous proof of the financial status of their owners, and, after emancipation, worn exclusively for important religious celebrations, becoming almost a nest-egg for the wearer.
They were considered a powerful protection against bad luck and evil spirits.
The charms themselves fell roughly into 4 categories:
1 devotional, having to do with Catholic symbols and faith
    2. votive, individual ex-votos, as thanks for a healing of an injury or illness
    3. propitiatory, asking for luck, happiness, money, such charms as the clenched hand, sometimes with a cross on the forefinger
    4. evocative, to recall a happy event or to symbolize plenty
While the same symbols were often used, the choice of amulets or charms in each cluster reflected the life story of the individual woman.
In this particular "penca" here is the symbolic meaning of the balangandans:
At the top on either side is a dove, symbolizing both the holy spirit, all the Christian martyrs and Iroco, African spirit protector of nature (whose worship is infused with mysteries)
