Description
Presented is an interesting Greek sterling silver box, likely for cigars or cigarettes. This is a modern piece, made in Athens. The lid of the box features the double-headed eagle with the Greek coat of arms on its breast, which is the symbol of the Hellenic Army General Staff. Beneath is its motto, which translates to 'Freedom stems from valour.' The banner underneath has the name for the Army Headquarters as it was renamed in 1968, as the (?????e?? St?at??). The interior of the box has a wood lining. This piece is in great overall condition. There is some very minor warping to the wood lining the interior of the lid. The lid shuts nicely and the hinge is in good shape. There may have been a name or other inscription removed above the shield, but if so it was done so well it's hard to be sure. There are no splits, no breaks, no dents, and no repairs.
The box is stamped sterling 925 on the underside, as well as M & R and 'Athenai' or Athens in Greek.
The box has approximate dimensions of 6 7/8 by 3 7/8 by 1 1/2 inches,
LxWxH.
The box weighs 568 grams or 20.0 regular ounces. Considering the lightness of the wood lining the interior, the vast majority of this weight is sterling silver.
