Description
Numerous South American countries adopted the Mauser rifle system in the 1890s in a race for the most modern shoulder arm available. By 1914, Peru had purchased 50,000 export model Gewehr 98 Mauser rifles from Germany, along with the beautifully made M-1898 "pipeback" bayonet produced by some of Germany's finest cutlers. This German WW1 SIMSON EXPORT PERUVIAN GEWEHR 98 MAUSER BAYONET is in good condition, with some rounding to the blade tip, some light sharpening to the blade edge, three small chips in the lower blade edge, some cleaning, scratching, pitting, and patina at each side of the blade, moderate loosening to the guard, some pitting and patina to the guard and pommel, period replacement smooth brown hardwood handle scales, the left handle scale remaining darker than the right, a somewhat noticeable gap between the spine of the left handle scale and the tang, a square shaped area of grayish stick tag residue at the middle right handle scale, some fading to the Peruvian crest at the bottom of the pommel, and with some overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the bayonet is in fine shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it features a 20 9/16" once bright fullered "pipeback" blade, sports tough period replacement smooth brown hardwood handle scales, and is stamped at the reverse ricasso with its maker, the famous "SIMSON & Co
/ SUHL". It carries the serial number "16734" marked along the right side of the downswept quillon, bears a fully functional "locking lug" attachment at the pommel, and exhibits the familiar Peruvian crest stamped at the bottom of that pommel. A
fine example of a rare, original German WW1 SIMSON EXPORT PERUVIAN GEWEHR 98 MAUSER BAYONET.
