Description
Up for bid is an old Latin American silver candlestick, possibly from the Spanish Colonial period. The stick is 9 3/8 inches tall and the base is 6 1/8 inches square. It weighs 565 grams. It has a deep socket with stylized chased leaves, a tapered octagonal stem, and a broad square base with cut corners and incurved sides. It stands on four small baluster feet. It is hollow, with a hole at the base of the socket connecting to the stem. There are small silvered copper clips inside the base at the upper edges, presumably an aid to soldering in the original construction. There are no marks.Condition on the stick is fair. The stem is dented, and the conical base is pushed down considerably, distorting the base and making it rock on its feet. The feet are a bit bent and worn as well. Still, the condition has consistent with the hard use pieces from this area often exhibit. It has a nice soft patina and has not been buffed or repaired. A neat old piece.
