Description
c1750-1800 Old Continental European Silver BoxPresented is a nice old Continental European silver box. The piece is very very old, and was very likely made in the second half of the 1700s, possibly the early 1800s. The lid is decorated with two humorous figures in period dress, and surrounded with Rococo style repousse decorations. The hinge is done in a sturdy five knuckle construction. The lid fits well, and has good tension, so that it does not flap open when turned over.
The piece is marked on the rim with 12 for 12 Loth or 800 silver purity. This was made in Continental Europe, likely in the Central or Eastern European regions.
The box was well used and has had numerous repairs. There are at least four solder repairs, possibly more, and four of these are visible from the outside of the box. There are small splits and pocks as well, and these are visible in the photos. The box still works well, and is a neat piece of silver history.
The box measures about 2 5/8 inches by 2 inches and about 1 1/8 inches tall.
The weight is 46.3 grams.
