Antique Silver Caddy Spoon Repousse Dutch Design Man On Horse Maker: JSSmoke Free Environment
Measurements: Total Length 5.5” Bowl: 2.75” x 1.75”
A lovely work of art displayed on this antique silver caddy spoon. Also commonly referred to as a “tea caddy spoon” and used to measure tea, the bowl is scalloped or crimped around the edge, with a repousse style beading, an intricate scene of structures and a windmill on top, and a gentleman on a horse in the center, prancing through a field with flowers at the bottom. The traditional short handle for this style spoon has a cherub with a decorative scroll and is finished at the top with a Griffin style handle. The curve at the back of the handle served as a way to hang the spoon off of a canister or bowl. The marks/hallmark on the back of the handle are of the maker’s initials JS, with what appears to be an old style upper case I, with two faint numbers. The “I” likely also gives an indication of the year made (1865) according to the Dutch Dating Code. The dolphin hallmark, was used by the Dutch between 1859-1893. In addition, many master designers from Europe, and most notably from the Netherlands, came to Hanau, Germany to create their work. Hence the dolphin hallmark can be found on Hanau silver. A fantastic addition for the avid collector of unique spoons, the tea
