Antique c1795 Rare 900S Dutch Silver Argyle Pot Fantastic Unusual Form Tea PotPresented is a fantastic, rare, old silver argyle likely made in Continental Europe, perhaps Dutch. The pot dates from the last quarter of the 1700s through the first quarter of the 1800s, or from between 1775-1825. This is a surprisingly complete argyle. It comes with three parts: The double-walled base, the handled top with hinged lid and finial, and the strainer insert for the top portion. The doubled walled base can be filled with hot or cold water through a hidden fill in the top of the handle, as shown in the photos. This piece was likely intended for tea or coffee rather than gravy, and more likely for tea. The piece has good weight for its size. In 40 years in the antique business, I've seen a lot of argyles, and I have never seen an argyle like this! This is a great piece.
The underside is marked with an S monogram and a crowned F mark that we have been told is Dutch. We have tested it with nitric acid and guarantee it to be at least 900 purity silver, if not sterling silver quality.
This piece in great overall condition, considering its age. The pieces fit very tightly and snugly together. The hinges to the top lid and the lid on the bottom's handle are in excellent working order. There are a few minor dents to the side of the bottom piece, which is double walled. So it would be difficult to remove the dents, although certainly possible. There is a tiny dent to the tip of the spout. There are no breaks, no cracks, no splits, no other dents, no chips and no repairs.
The piece measures about 5 3/4 inches from handle to spout, and 6 1/8 inches tall.
The argyle weighs 401.0 grams or 14.15 ounces.
