Description
A 19th C DUTCH SILVER HEXAGONAL REPOUSSE ROCOCO VASE, c. 1837This is a Dutch silver rococo vase, in the form of a hexagonal cone, with a flat, high polish lip surrounding the rim, and a flat banded foot with impressed linear decoration around the base.
Each of the six tapered panels is ornately decorated with a trio of kidney shaped, raised and chased, figural lozenges. The largest image is of lovers in a pastoral setting, embracing while their servant stand to one side. The centre panel is of two putti making music on the shore of a mountain lake. The third panel is of sheet music and baroque instruments. The panels have gadroon and foliate framing. The last panel is finished at the bottom with a centre shell, and a suspended floral swag.
The vase would be beautiful filled with flowers, or re-purposed as a holder, on a dressing tray, for toiletry articles.
Marked: Stamped on the bottom of the base with Netherlands assay, likely for .875, Amsterdam, 1837
(pictured).
