    Description

Here was have a great grouping of two m1866 French chassepot rifle yataghan sword bayonets.
The first we have is 1869 st. Etienne manufactured bayonet that was captured by Germany during the Franco Prussian war (1870-1871). It has be re-serialized with a german unit marking (88.L.II.4.233). From my research this means the 88th division Landesverteidigung (German civil defense). The “II” is a number known as a “kammerstück” this indicates its use (ceremony, drill, field use, ect.). I have not yet deciphered to which each one is correlated to. The last two digits are company followed by a rifle number. The “20” marked on the reverse is a common ww1 era german marking as these were extensively issued as “dress swords” for police. The number correlates with a rifle. The blade is in great condition with its original edge. Unfortunately it is missing the correct german modified scabbard.
The second bayonet is tulle 1870 manufactured example with matching scabbard. Unfortunately the edge has seen some sharpening however it is just surface level.
Both bayonet blades are straight and both locking mechanisms work. They both fit in their scabbards well. This is a great grouping of two bayonets that saw both sides of the Franco Prussian war. Would make an amazing display.
